Richard works in heavier steel than most shops. Steel is sold by gauge, and the lower the number, the thicker the metal. He uses 11 gauge on railings, about 1/8 inch thick, and quarter-inch posts on driveway gates. Most pre-made kits use thinner metal and bolt together, and a lot of his calls are to fix kits someone else put in. He'll fit one if you want, but he'll show you the difference first.

The owner
Work directly with Richard
He spent 40 years as a jeweler before he picked up a welder, and he kept the same eye for detail. He's an Air Force veteran who worked on radar and electrical systems, and a commercial pilot who has flown 20-passenger hot air balloons. He answers the phone himself, and you deal with him from the first call to the finished job.
It started with a curved staircase Richard built. A contractor friend saw it and said he only knew three people who could do work like that. Richard told him, "Well, make that four."
Small repairs are welcome too. You can call about a broken bracket or a loose handrail.

- Yes. Richard is based in Franklin and works across Nashville, Brentwood and Murfreesboro. Chattanooga and Ooltewah are a longer drive, so he groups those jobs together and books them in advance.
- Is 3D Custom Welding licensed and insured?
- Yes, both. If you need a copy of the paperwork, ask Richard and he'll send it over.
